All praise is for Allah, Lord of the worlds, and peace and blessings be upon our beloved Prophet Muhammad (sallallahu alaihi wasallam) — the one who stood in the darkness, crying for his Ummah.

My dear brothers and sisters, Assalamu Alaikum wa Rahmatullahi wa Barakatuhu.

Imagine a moment when the world falls silent. The streets are empty, the homes are dark, and the noise of the day is finally extinguished. In that deep silence, in the last third of the night, a single, powerful voice rings out across the heavens:

"Is there anyone calling upon Me, that I may answer him? Is there anyone asking of Me, that I may give him? Is there anyone seeking My forgiveness, that I may forgive him?"

This is not a general announcement. This is a personal, repeated invitation from the King of all kings, Allah Himself, who descends to the lowest heaven, waiting for you to call upon Him. SubhanAllah—what an honour! The question we must let shake our souls is simple: Where are we when this Divine invitation is announced?

What is Tahajjud? The Prayer of the Successful

Tahajjud is the night prayer—a purely voluntary (Nafl) prayer performed after sleeping for a short while, during the blessed hours just before Fajr.

It was the constant practice (Sunnah) of our Prophet Muhammad (sallallahu alaihi wasallam), and the foundation upon which his spiritual strength was built. As Allah commanded him in the Qur'an (Surah Al-Isra, Ayah 79):

“And rise from your sleep during the night; it is an additional prayer for you, so your Lord may raise you to a praised station (Maqam Mahmud).”

This is not a prayer for the casual worshipper. This is the hallmark of the successful: the Prophets, who stood until their feet swelled; the Companions, who preferred darkness over their warm beds; and the Awliya (Friends of Allah), whose tears watered their prayer mats. They understood that real power and success come not from position, but from sincere prostration.

Allah's Love Letter: Why the Night is Special

The Qur'an frequently praises those who sacrifice their sleep for their Creator, making it clear that those who stand at night are fundamentally different from those who sleep through it.

1. The Badge of the Righteous

Allah describes His special servants (Surah Adh-Dhariyat, Ayah 17-18):

"They used to sleep but little by night. And in the hours before dawn, they were found asking forgiveness."

The distinguishing mark of the righteous is the abandonment of comfortable sleep for pre-dawn Istighfar (seeking forgiveness).

2. The Minimal Sleep of the Chosen

Surah As-Sajdah (Ayah 16) paints a vivid picture of these elite believers:

"Their sides forsake their beds to invoke their Lord in fear and hope, and they spend out of what We have provided them."

Their sides forsake their beds—it's not an occasional act, but a deep-rooted habit. Their beds feel like strangers, and their true home is the prayer mat.

3. The Prophet's Example: The Peak of Gratitude

Our Prophet (sallallahu alaihi wasallam) never abandoned Tahajjud. When Aisha (Razi Allahu Anha) questioned why he would stand until his blessed feet swelled, given that his past and future sins were already forgiven, his response was a lesson for all time:

"Should I not be a grateful servant?"

If the most beloved creation of Allah stood in such devotion, what possible excuse can we have? As he confirmed: “The best prayer after the obligatory prayers is the night prayer.”

7 Miraculous Benefits of Committing to Tahajjud

Tahajjud is more than just worship; it is therapy for the soul and a catalyst for change.

  1. Direct Access to Your Lord: The Prophet Muhammad (sallallahu alaihi wasallam) said the servant is closest to Allah during the last part of the night. This is your personal, unfiltered channel to the Divine.

  2. Guaranteed Forgiveness: When Allah calls, asking "Who will seek My forgiveness?", He is waiting to wipe the slate clean. This time is a cleansing flood for your soul.

  3. Answered Du'as: The Prophet (sallallahu alaihi wasallam) specified that the Du'a most likely to be answered is during the last part of the night. Your impossible dreams, your deepest pains, your requests for Rizq (sustenance) and healing—ask now, when the door is wide open.

  4. Protection from Shaytan: The Prophet (sallallahu alaihi wasallam) taught that Shaytan ties three knots at the back of our necks to keep us asleep. Waking up, performing Wudu, and praying Tahajjud loosens all three knots, ensuring you start your day active, productive, and in good spirits, instead of lazy and irritable.

  5. Special Chambers in Jannah: Allah has prepared special chambers in Paradise for those who "pray at night when people are asleep." This supreme honour is reserved for those who sacrifice their comfort for their Creator.

  6. Light on Your Face: Ibn Abbas (Razi Allahu Anhu) said those who pray at night have beauty and peace on their faces during the day. This isn't just physical beauty; it's the unmistakable glow of closeness to Allah.

  7. Healing for Body and Soul: The Prophet (sallallahu alaihi wasallam) explicitly mentioned that night prayer "cures the body of disease" alongside erasing sins and preventing wrongdoing. It is a complete transformation package.

Overcoming Shaytan's Obstacles

Let’s be honest: Shaytan hates Tahajjud. He knows this prayer makes a believer unstoppable. He will whisper five common lies to stop you:

Shaytan’s Lie

The Tahajjud Truth

"You're too tired."

This tiredness is a test of your sincerity. Fight it for Allah!

"You'll miss sleep and be unproductive."

20 minutes of sincere Tahajjud brings more Barakah and focus than hours of shallow sleep.

"You're not pious enough for this."

Tahajjud isn't for the pious; it's what makes you pious. Everyone starts somewhere.

"You can pray later or tomorrow."

The moment is fleeting. Allah is calling now. Later never comes.

"You don't need to prove your love."

Love requires sacrifice. Sacrifice your sleep for the One you claim to love most.

How to Start Your Tahajjud Journey

Tahajjud is not a duty; it's a gift. Consistency is more beloved to Allah than quantity. Better to pray two Rak'ahs every night than twenty once a month.

  1. Set Your Intention & Sleep Early: Make an honest Du'a before sleeping: "O Allah, wake me for Tahajjud." Crucially, go to bed early! You can't wake up at 4 AM if you sleep at 2 AM.

  2. The Timing: Aim for the last one-third of the night before Fajr. If Fajr is at 5:30 AM, try to wake up between 4:30 AM and 5:00 AM.

  3. Perform Wudu: Wake up and perform a fresh Wudu.

  4. Pray at Least Two Rak'ahs: Start with two simple Rak'ahs. You may pray 2, 4, 6, 8, or more Rak'ahs in sets of two.

  5. End with Witr: If you haven't prayed Witr after Isha, pray it now, as the last prayer of the night should be Witr.

  6. Make Sincere Du'a: This is the most vital step. Talk to Allah directly. Be specific, be honest, and pour out your heart. Use the powerful prophetic Du'as like: "Allahumma innaka 'afuwwun tuhibbul-'afwa fa'fu 'anni" (O Allah, You are Pardoning and You love to pardon, so pardon me).

Tonight, when you lie down, make a promise to yourself. Set that alarm 15 minutes earlier. Let the stars be witnesses to your love for Allah.

I pray to Allah to grant us the strength and sincerity to be among those whose "sides forsake their beds" in humility and hope. Ameen.
